St Helen’s Bus Terminal Demolition & Regeneration Works
As part of St Helens Council’s ‘once-in-a-generation’ transformation programme, Bradley were proud to be appointed to deliver the asbestos removal and demolition of the former town centre bus terminal roughly 7000m2, working in partnership with Vinci. This was the first stage in the demolition works contracted to Bradley, who later started works to the Hardshaw Shopping Centre, adjacent to the bus terminal.
This key project plays an important role in reshaping the town centre, helping to create a more attractive, family-friendly and sustainable environment for the local community. Through careful planning, close collaboration and a strong focus on safety, our team has supported the wider vision to revitalise the area by completing this early stage.
Scope of Works
Bradley’s full scope included:
- Non-licensed asbestos removal
- Working around live services
- Out of hour demolition to roadside commercial buildings
- Mechanical demolition of bus terminal canopies and structures
- Monitoring of traffic management
- Locating and exposing live services
- Removal of slab and foundations
- Management of vac excavating
- Crushing on site
- Installation of piling mat to clients specification

Out of Hours Working
A key challenge on this project was the site’s close proximity to operational businesses, live bus routes, and nearby residential properties. Managing demolition works in such a busy, sensitive environment required careful coordination and a proactive approach to minimise disruption.
To address this, Bradley carried out a series of planned out-of-hours operations, ensuring that critical demolition activities were undertaken safely while keeping disturbance to the public to an absolute minimum. Detailed logistics planning, clear communication with stakeholders, strict safety controls and a dedicated site team were central to successfully delivering this phase of the works. This approach enabled the team to maintain programme efficiency without compromising on safety or community impact

Social Value & Client Support
In addition to delivering the contracted works, Bradley provided further support to Vinci through a collaborative approach to developing Demolition Management Plans. These were carefully prepared to help strengthen existing planning applications.
In addition to project delivery, Bradley remained committed to creating a positive social value impact by supporting a range of social value initiatives within the local St Helens community.
Working closely with partners and stakeholders, the team actively contributed to community focused activities, helping to support local organisations.

Ways to Work Workshop – Social Value Case Study
Members of our Bradley management team hosted a career workshop at the Ways to Work centre in St Helens.
Ways to Work is the borough’s largest employment support programme, delivered by St Helens Borough Council in partnership with local organisations. It aims to help residents access sustainable employment, education, and training opportunities.
The workshop introduced attendees to the demolition and asbestos industries, offering insights into how to begin a career in these fields and what training is required. Taking place near the ongoing town centre projects the session also included a site visit where attendees observed live demolition operations and learned about essential health and safety practices, as well as the equipment and machinery used on site.

“Everyone thought the session was very informative, it was good to know about the different job roles and routeways, the different cards and training and they all found it extremely beneficial.”
Joanne Lyon (Employment Coach and Mentor at Ways to Work)
Sustainability
While remaining fully committed to programme delivery and avoiding delays, Bradley also took a proactive approach to identifying additional sustainability initiatives that could be implemented throughout the project.
Examples of these were:
- Careful hand removal of over 2000kg slate tiles to be reused again during the construction phases
- Recycling glass from the bus terminal structures via Pilkington Glass as part of a carbon-saving assessment
